NONGPOH: Aggrieved by the decision of the State Government on its approval toward the Killing Hydro Electric Power project possessed to be set up along the Meghalaya-Assam Border, the Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) central body on Monday strongly expressed its deep concern and opposition toward the decision of the government.

It may mentioned that the local residents and pressure groups of the State have expressed their stiff opposition toward the 240 MW power project which is to carried out by the NEEPCO company, as the project will result large scale of displacement and submersion of lands in the areas.

Speaking with the RBYF chief, B Thangkhiew said that, it was not justified for the State government to move with the approval toward the project when its citizen along with the supports of the pressure group had not shown their willingness and also opposed the project.

“This hydro electric project has been opposed and not accepted by the people of the State for the last 40 years during the tenure ship of the then Mawhati legislator Late Martin N Majaw and also the local residents of the Lamalong and other adjacent villages held a public meeting last year to protest against the proposed of the project, which is clearly indicated that this project is not acceptable and it is opposed by the people, then how can the State government give its go ahead decision for the project without the concern of its people”, Thangkhiew stressed.

On this regard, the RBYF had strongly urged the government to listen to the voice of its people.
