SHILLONG, March 2: Former three-term Mawsynram MLA Mestonath Kharchandy passed away on Sunday at the age of 99.
Kharchandy, who also served as a minister, represented the constituency as a Congress MLA from 1983 to 1998. He is survived by his wife, Siwilda Marbaniang, and three children — Isabel, Clarabel and Wanteilang Marbaniang.
In the 1998 elections, he lost to former MLA DP Iangjuh of the UDP by 1,978 votes.
A respected leader and lifelong resident of Riatsamthiah, Block 3, Kharchandy was known for his dedication to public service.
His funeral service will be held on March 4 at 1:00 PM, followed by the final rites at the Church of God (M&A) Cemetery in Mawprem.
