SHILLONG, April 3: The State BJP on Thursday hailed the new Waqf Amendment Bill, thanking the Narendra Modi-led central government as well as all NDA partners for passing the bill in Lok Sabha. The Meghalaya unit of the party welcomed the insertion which states that no land belonging to tribals under the provisions of the Fifth Schedule or the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution shall be declared or deemed to be Waqf property.
BJP’s general secretary in the state, Wankitbok Pohshna, said, “Once again it has been proved that only the BJP-led NDA government can protect the rights of minorities and tribal people of our nation. This provision in the Bill, ensuring that any land in our state covered by the Sixth Schedule remains protected against Waqf encroachment, should be celebrated by everyone in Meghalaya.”
“It’s also worth remembering that earlier this week, the Catholic Bishops Conference of India came out in support of the Waqf Amendment Bill and urged political parties to adopt an unbiased and constructive approach to the issue. However, those opposed to the Waqf Bill are conveniently ignoring the voice of the minorities while claiming to be champions of minority rights. This kind of devious strategies aimed at spreading misinformation so unjust and corrupt practices can continue has no place under the leadership of our beloved Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” the BJP leader stated.
