SHILLONG, April 5: Meghalaya has been grappling with the drug menace for years, and the situation has become increasingly alarming over the past two to three years. However, a concerted effort is now underway to combat the crisis, with initiatives becoming more coordinated under the Drug Reduction, Elimination, and Action Mission (DREAM). The mission also plans to adopt the Kerala model, where retired doctors and teachers work as a team to provide counselling and treatment to drug users by engaging college students and other stakeholders.
One of the biggest challenges the state currently faces in its fight against drug abuse is the shortage of detoxification centres. Efforts are ongoing to establish such facilities, as detoxification is considered a critical component of the rehabilitation process.
DREAM Mission is optimistic that the situation can be brought under control within the next two years. To eradicate the drug menace from the state, the youth, civil society, citizens, and the Government of Meghalaya are coming together to develop and implement strategies aimed at securing a safer future for the younger generation.
Hardeep Ryntathiang, Rangbah Shnong of Nongsohpoh in West Shillong — one of the reported hotspots — said the government is taking the issue seriously. He assured full support from the locality in addressing the problem. Highlighting that their area shares a border with the Shillong Cantonment — where drug-related activities are reportedly high — he said they are maintaining strict vigilance to prevent any illegal activities.
Youth activist Barilang Pyngrope emphasised the need for the government to intensify its efforts to tackle the issue. She also urged young people to stay away from drugs and avoid ruining their futures.
Meanwhile, Naba Bhattacharjee stated that the Shillong All Faith Forum has decided to partner with the Meghalaya Government to address the challenge. He added that all religious denominations have been urged to raise awareness against drug abuse in their respective places of worship.
