SHILLONG, April 20: In a noteworthy development for higher education governance in the Northeast, Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland S Phangnon Konyak has been nominated as a member of the Court of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
The appointment, formalised by the Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar, in his capacity as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, took effect from April 15, according to an official communication from the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.
Reacting to the nomination, the State BJP unit described it as “a moment of immense pride and recognition of Konyak’s unwavering commitment to public service.”
In a statement issued soon after the announcement, the party said, “Her inclusion in NEHU’s apex policy body reinforces the Centre’s resolve to strengthen regional participation in key academic institutions.”
The party added, “Konyak’s appointment will help articulate the educational and developmental aspirations of the Northeast, and her presence will bring valuable insights rooted in the region’s socio-cultural realities.”
Her nomination is widely viewed as a meaningful step in bridging academia and public life in the Northeast, offering opportunities for communities to be better represented in decisions shaping the region’s educational future.
NEHU, which came into existence through parliamentary legislation in 1973, has long served as a vital academic institution for Meghalaya, Nagaland, and the erstwhile Union Territories of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.
Over the decades, the university has nurtured generations of professionals and public figures who have shaped the region’s socio-political and intellectual landscape.
