SHILLONG, May 9: The state BJP on Friday said it has received assurances from the Border Security Force (BSF) that sufficient deployment and heightened vigilance are in place along Meghalaya’s 443-kilometre international border with Bangladesh.
On Thursday, cabinet minister and senior BJP leader AL Hek had raised concerns about the border security with the BSF.
“I spoke to the BSF IG yesterday and enough force is deployed in the border area as it is vulnerable and fragile. The force is on high alert and security has been beefed up,” said cabinet minister and senior BJP leader AL Hek.
The discussion comes amid renewed concerns over infiltration and cross-border smuggling, particularly in East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills. These districts are currently under a night curfew order issued by the state government on Thursday, citing the risk of movement by members of proscribed groups and illegal actors through unfenced and porous stretches of the border.
The curfew, effective from 8 pm to 6 am, prohibits movement near the international boundary with the intent to cross into Bangladesh or to enter Indian territory unlawfully.
