TURA, May 22: With the academic future of over 60 students in the Kharkutta constituency hanging in balance, TMC MDC Cherak W. Momin has written to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, seeking his immediate intervention into the ongoing admission crisis faced by students from the Adokgre C&RD Block in North Garo Hills (NGH) district.
The crisis follows an impressive academic performance by students in the Garo Hills region, where over 80 per cent of candidates passed this year’s SSLC examinations. While most districts have managed the surge in student numbers by introducing additional morning and evening classes, the situation in Adokgre remains dire.
Adokgre, home to a population in the tens of thousands, has only one senior secondary school, namely Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) School.
With limited seats and inadequate infrastructure, the school has been unable to accommodate the growing number of admission requests. The dearth of teaching staff and basic facilities has further compounded the issue, especially for students from remote and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
On May 22, Cherak submitted a letter to the chief minister through the deputy commissioner, urging the state government to take swift action to ensure that students currently left out are provided access to education.
“With only one school that caters to higher education in Adokgre, many students, who do not have the financial strength to go to even places like nearby Kharkutta or Mendipathar are unable to continue their studies. I request that consideration is made to implement a morning shift in the same school to accommodate those that are missing out,” stated Cherak in his letter to the CM.
Earlier, civil society organisations (CSOs) from Adokgre had called on the chief minister regarding the same issue, with the latter assuring them that the matter would be looked into.
However, Cherak noted that they are still awaiting concrete action.
