Man gets decades of imprisonment for repeated sexual assault of minor

SHILLONG, June 1: A Special POCSO Court in East Khasi Hills has convicted one Pynskhem Mawa, sentencing him to decades of imprisonment for repeated sexual assault of a minor.
The judgment, delivered by Special Judge (POCSO) MK Lyngdoh, found Mawa guilty under Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, read with Section 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). In addition to a 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs 30,000, with a default penalty of four months’ additional imprisonment. He was also sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 506 IPC.
The case was initially investigated by Woman Police Sub-Inspector L Kharjana.
Furthermore, the court sentenced Mawa to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000 for an offence punishable under Section 6 of the POCSO Act.
In default of payment, he will have to undergo six additional months of imprisonment. He was also sentenced to three years of imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000 for an offence under Section 8 of the POCSO Act, and in default of payment, a further imprisonment of two months. For an offence under Section 10 of the POCSO Act, he received a sentence of seven years of imprisonment with a fine of Rs 20,000, with a default sentence of three months. Lastly, under Section 506 IPC, he was sentenced to two years of imprisonment along with a fine of ₹10,000, and in default, an additional two months of imprisonment.
All the sentences will run concurrently.
The incidents took place in the year 2020, when the survivor was 16 years old. The convict had committed aggravated penetrative sexual assault on the minor on multiple occasions.
The FIR was registered at Sohra Police Station and the case was subsequently investigated by WPSI V. Diengdoh.
The trial was conducted by Special Public Prosecutor Evalarisha Rynjah.
