SHILLONG, June 20: The Seng Samla Mawlai Pyllun (SSMP) has urged the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department to lay a separate and dedicated water pipeline from Mawphlang to Mawlai Mawroh, where the local water tank is located, to resolve the persistent issue of water scarcity in the Mawlai area.
On Friday, SSMP representatives met with the PHE Chief Engineer to express concern over the inadequate water supply, stating that several localities in Mawlai receive water only twice a week.
SSMP president Samuel Biam highlighted the hardships faced by residents due to the irregular supply, delays in new water connections, and the growing demand in the area.
He said that a dedicated pipeline would ensure consistent and sufficient water delivery, eliminating reliance on the existing shared pipeline that serves other regions as well.
“We request an update on the status of our appeal and the steps being taken to address the issues we raised earlier. If there are any constraints, we are open to collaboration in finding workable solutions,” Biam stated in a letter submitted to the Chief Engineer.
He further noted that residents of Mawlai regularly pay their water bills and therefore deserve reliable service.
“If a dedicated pipeline already exists, we request details regarding its location and route. We would like to carry out a joint site inspection with the Chief Engineer and relevant officials to verify its condition,” he added.
According to Biam, such an inspection would help the community better understand the current infrastructure and identify any problems affecting the water supply to Mawlai.
“It is unfair that despite timely payments, Mawlai continues to suffer from water shortages, while other areas that are reportedly less consistent in bill payments receive daily water supply,” Biam asserted.
He urged the PHE Chief Engineer to respond to their request by June 25 and warned that failure to address the concerns seriously and promptly would compel the SSMP to escalate the matter to higher authorities and take further action.
