AMPATI, July 9: Tura MP Saleng Sangma on Wednesday applauded the Fisheries department for its efforts in achieving surplus fish production in South West Garo Hills and suggested exploring ways to export surplus fish to other parts of the state and beyond.
The MP appreciated the department’s efforts while chairing and reviewing the status of central scheme implementation under various line departments at the District Development Coordination & Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting, which was held at the DRDA Conference Hall in Ampati.
During the meeting, the MP emphasised the need for ensuring the efficacy, reach and success of the central schemes in the district.
Saleng, who is also the DISHA Chairman, was accompanied by committee members, including UG Sangma, Simberth Ch Marak, Learmilford A Sangma and Manseng D. Sangma, among others.
South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak, and officials of the district administration also extended their support during the day-long review.
During the meeting, district officers of various departments presented reports on the status of project implementation, highlighting achievements, challenges and future plans.
Assuring his support and commitment to taking up concerns with the relevant ministries, the MP urged the implementing departments and their officers to sensitise people at the grassroots level, so as to ensure that the benefits of government schemes reach every citizen.
During the review, the MP addressed issues such as the increase in infant mortality rate (IMR), rising anaemia cases in the district and the supply of medicines, while seeking to understand the requirements at Ampati Civil Hospital.
Raising concerns over frequent power outages in the district, Saleng asked the MePDCL to study potential power projects to address the issue.
He also questioned whether the ICDS department had moved to increase the wages of Anganwadi workers and helpers, noting that current rates are below labour norms.
Additionally, discussions were held on increasing foodgrain yield in the district.
