TURA, July 10: A social activist has sought police action against the Sumo Winger Association of Tura for allegedly detaining wingers travelling from Tura to Baghmara at Dalu, in addition to carrying out illegal stoppages at Tura.
In his complaint to the West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, social activist Greneth M. Sangma stated that the high-handed behaviour of the Association is causing undue inconvenience to innocent passengers and the public who travel by these sumos or wingers for various purposes.
Besides causing inconvenience, he said, the Association’s actions amount to coercion, intimidation, harassment, wrongful confinement and wrongful restraint, violating the fundamental rights of citizens, including the right to freedom of movement under Article 19(1)(d) of the Constitution of India and the right to freedom of trade and commerce under Article 301.
He added that such actions by the Tura Sumo Winger Association are hurting sentiments and creating unnecessary conflict between people based on region, which he described as unacceptable and against the law. He appealed to the SP to investigate the matter immediately, take stern action against Association members involved in such activities and consider cancelling their registration if found guilty.
He also shared with the police links to social media updates showing a vehicle allegedly being detained by Association members, calling for prompt and effective action to ensure the rights and safety of travellers in particular, and the public in general.
