NONGPOH, July 15: Several households and standing crops were left damaged after a sudden storm struck the villages of Umdap Dumu and Umdap Rngi, located under the Umling C&RD Block in Ri-Bhoi on Monday.
The sudden cyclonic storm uprooted hundreds of betel nut and other large trees, brought down electric poles, and caused widespread destruction to standing crops and homes in both villages.
Residents of the affected areas expressed deep sorrow over the significant losses they suffered due to the unanticipated natural calamity.
Many recounted the harrowing moments when the storm swept through the region, leaving behind a trail of damage.
Speaking to media persons, Headman of Umdap Rngi, Alexander Maring, and Headman of Umdap Dumu, Angelius Maring, confirmed that this was the first time such a severe storm had hit their villages, causing massive losses to both property and agricultural resources.
As most villagers rely on farming as their primary livelihood, the storm has left them disheartened and struggling. The destruction of crops — their only source of income — has raised serious concerns about food security and economic hardship in the weeks to come.  In light of the situation, the village authorities have appealed to the government, including the Umling C&RD Block office, for immediate relief measures. They have also urged the local MLA and MDC from Nongpoh constituency to step in and ensure that affected families receive the necessary assistance to rebuild their lives.
