NONGPOH, July 23: Members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Kyrdemkulai 5 KM Unit, led by vice president Ambyrius Kharkrang and sports and cultural secretary Elisha Lyngdoh Marshillong, on Wednesday apprehended seven migrant labourers who had entered the area allegedly without valid documents.
Following an inquiry, the KSU found that the individuals could not produce any official identification or work-related documents. Consequently, they were immediately expelled from the locality. Meanwhile, the KSU has argued that the presence of undocumented migrant workers deprives local residents of their daily livelihood opportunities, especially those who depend on manual labour to support their families.
The KSU members also issued a stern warning to individuals or contractors who habitually bring in non-local labourers without verifying their credentials.
The KSU reiterated that it would not tolerate such illegal practices and would continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety, security and employment rights of the indigenous population in the area.
