SHILLONG, July 23: The construction of the new assembly building at Mawdiangdiang in New Shillong Township is facing delays due to technical complexities involving sound, security, and structural design, with the state government now planning to inaugurate the same during the 2026 Budget session.
The state government had earlier planning to the hold the autumn session of the Assembly in the new building.
The construction work is nearing its final phase, with officials indicating that around 95 per cent of the civil works have been completed.
Acknowledging that the hall component of the project has proved more challenging than expected, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said, “We had some delays because there are  a lot of technical issues in terms of technology. The hall part is creating a bit of more work for us, because we are looking at security aspects and we’re looking at the sound quality.”
He explained that the design of the hall required additional work to manage echo and acoustic reverberation.
“It’s a big hall, so there’s a lot of reverb, a lot of echo, requires special padding and different kind of sound acoustics to be done, so on and so forth. I don’t want to go into details, but I’m hopeful that very soon we’ll be able to enter this particular assembly. So that’s something that we all are looking forward to,” he added.
The chief minister thanked Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma for overseeing the progress and acknowledged the presence of legislators and dignitaries.
The chief minister later inspected the ongoing construction work of the assembly building.
