Large cache of arms, ammunition seized near Kolkata
BARASAT, (WB) Aug 4: A large cache of arms and ammunition were seized from a flat in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Monday.The detective department of Barrackpore Police Commissionerate arrested one Madhusudan Mukherjee, who was allegedly in possession of the flat, in connection with the seizure, the official said.Sixteen firearms and 904 rounds of ammunition were seized from the flat in Rahara.The police also seized around Rs one lakh in cash, 248 grams of gold and more than 10 kg antique coins, the value of which is being examined.Apart from these, nine small arms were also recovered, of which are one 9 mm pistol, two 7 mm pistols, three revolvers and three single-shot guns.The officer said that 905 rounds of ammunition were also seized from the flat.Mukherjee, who used to pose as a cloth merchant, was arrested from his ground-floor flat in Regent Park area of Rahara, around 15 km from Kolkata.(PTI)
Man accused of raping and murdering infant girl escapes
THANE, Aug 4: A man accused of raping and murdering a 6-year-old girl in 2023 escaped on Monday when he was brought to Bhiwandi court in Thane district for a hearing.The accused, identified as Salamat Ali Ansari, had allegedly raped and murdered the girl and then hid her body in a bucket in a closed room in 2023, and he was held in the case on September 20 that year from Bihar, the official said.Police said all efforts are being made to nab Ansari, who was facing charges under Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. 20 peacocks found dead in Karnataka
TUMAKURU, Aug 4: Twenty peacocks were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Tumakuru district in Karnataka.Of the deceased, three were male and 17 female, they said.The farmers who discovered the dead peacocks alerted the police, following which they, along with the forest department officials, reached the spot.The cause of the death is yet to be ascertained, a senior police official said, adding that samples have been collected and sent to Forensic Science Labs .On June 26, a female tigress and her four cubs were found dead in the Hugyam range of the district. In this regard, authorities arrested three individuals, including the cow’s owner, who allegedly poisoned the cow’s carcass, suspected of causing the tigers’ deaths. (PTI)
