MAWKYRWAT, Aug 4: The South West Khasi Hills district unit of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP) on Monday expressed concern over alleged influx of illegal migrants into different parts of the district, especially the India-Bangladesh border areas.
President of FKJGP’s South West Khasi Hills district unit, Kenesjune L Nonglait, said the federation is deeply concerned over the illegal entry of the immigrants in the wake of the eviction drives being carried out by the Assam government.
Nonglait said the federation received information that many such people had entered the district by vehicles, but when its members went to Ranikor area, they did not find the persons.
Noting that the actions taken by the Assam government posed a direct threat to the tribal population of Meghalaya as the illegal migrants may enter the state, the federation has decided to set up a check gate in Ranikor area under Ranikor civil sub-division.
Nonglait was talking to media persons after the federation had conducted a surprise inspection of non-local shopkeepers’ trading licence at Nonghyllam, Umsur, and Nongjri areas under Ranikor civil sub-division.
The federation found that some non-local shops were operating without a trading licence. They were temporarily closed down. They can resume operation after obtaining a valid trading licence.
The federation found that some medical stores did neither have a pharmacy licence nor a trading licence.
Expressing concern over it, Balse Kharbani, general secretary of FKJGP’s district unit, urged authorities to immediately conduct an inspection in the area.
Further, he urged all headmen of Ranikor area to stay alert and inform the police immediately if they see any movement of suspected illegal migrants in their villages.
