SHILLONG, Aug 6: Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang on Wednesday said an inquiry has been launched into allegation that an alleged policeman extorted five non-tribals by demanding an “entry fee.”
The investigation is being conducted separately by the Commandant of 1st MLP Battalion Herbert Lyngdoh and Ri-Bhoi Senior Superintendent of Police Vivekananda Singh Rathore.
“Appropriate action will be taken based on their reports,” the DGP assured.
According to reports, the 1st MLP Battalion Commandant has assigned the Assistant Commandant to lead the internal probe and submit a detailed report.
The accused, identified as Brill Rongpeit, is reportedly a member of the 1st MLP Battalion’s brass band unit.
The Umiam Circle of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) alleged that he collected Rs 1,000 each from the five non-tribals who were travelling in a vehicle (AS25 CC 4375).
The KSU asked authorities to clarify whether Rongpeit is a legitimate police officer misusing his position or an impersonator misusing police identification.
The Union urged the government and the Police department to thoroughly investigate the matter and take strong measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
