Connectivity boost in New Shillong

SHILLONG, Aug 9: Road connectivity in the New Shillong Township will get a major boost once it is properly connected with roads by the end of this year.
The Ummir to Mawkhanu Road, which was recently unveiled, is attracting a lot of people due to scenic views. Some more roads are being constructed in the area.
The Ummir to Mawkhanu Road is one of the key access points to the upcoming Administrative and Knowledge City in the New Shillong Township.
Several roads are coming up within the New Shillong Township to address the issue of connectivity. They include roads from Ummir to Mawkhanu and Kynoton to Lyngkien, Bellefonte to New Township, Diengpasoh road to Shillong Bypass, and Bribah Mawpat to New Township. They are being built at a total cost of Rs 343 crore.
In phase 2, roads measuring 16.6 km with 15m width, and 3.2 km of 2-lane roads with 7.5m width have been proposed at a total cost of Rs 185 crore. They are expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The government is also planning avenue plantations along the major roads.
The 8-10 km stretch of Ummir to Mawkhanu Road will soon be adorned with avenue plantations. The government will plant cherry blossom trees and indigenous species in a carefully planned layout to create a symmetrical, serene landscape.
