SHILLONG, Aug 11: The University Student Volunteer Group ASEZ of the World Mission Society Church of God on Monday launched the ‘Zero Plastic 2040’ campaign at Nongrah Road with an aim to transform the area into a pleasant environment.
Altogether, 622 ASEZ members, friends and family members volunteered in the drive, meticulously collecting discarded plastic items, including disposable plastic straws and cups, food wrappers and plastic bags, along with various types of household waste, along a one-km stretch of Nongrah Road.
The street is frequented by people from inside and outside the neighbourhood, including university students, making clean-up activities urgently needed.
The volunteers worked for two hours and collected 400 kg of waste. Recyclable plastics were separated and disposed of according to standards. A garbage collection vehicle was provided by the Rangbah Shnong of Nongrah.
It may be mentioned that ASEZ also raised awareness about the importance and necessity of environmental protection through a panel exhibition highlighting the severity of plastic pollution and practical protection practices during the cleanup.
Meanwhile, locals actively supported ASEZ and the campaign by signing the ‘Zero Plastic 2040’ petition, pledging their commitment to environmental protection.
It is pertinent to note that the ‘Zero Plastic 2040’ campaign is ASEZ’s global initiative to address the increasingly serious plastic problem.
As the international community works towards agreements and other measures, ASEZ is focusing its efforts on campaigns, education, resource recycling, and local cleanups to end plastic pollution by 2040.
