SHILLONG, Aug 11: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) on Monday demanded the creation of permanent livestock and meat check gates at all strategic entry and transit points, with round-the-clock enforcement, as well as compulsory veterinary health checks and certification before livestock or meat products are allowed entry into Meghalaya.
During a meeting with Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister AL Hek, HITO expressed concern over the unchecked smuggling and illegal import of cattle, poultry, piggery and other livestock products into and through the state.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Hek acknowledged that the department has, from time to time, received complaints about the lack of healthcare centres for livestock and the transportation of unhealthy animals into the country.
According to the minister, sanctions for the creation of livestock healthcare centres have been received, and construction is underway in Ri Bhoi district and West Garo Hills.
On the issue of cattle smuggling to Bangladesh from Meghalaya, Hek informed that strict directions have been issued to ensure that livestock smuggling from the state is prevented at all costs.
