Shillong, Aug 12: The Khasi Students’ Union South West Khasi Hills District unit has claimed that Bangladeshi nationals have adopted a new strategy to secure Indian citizenship by marrying non-Khasi women living along the international border.
The KSU said within a few months of their marriage, the Bangladeshi nationals obtain EPIC and other documents, enabling them to become Indian citizens.
The union said it has raised the matter with the district administration and alleged that local “traitors” are actively assisting these Bangladeshi nationals in criminal activities.
The KSU also questioned the involvement of Bangladeshis in illegal coal mining activities in the area despite a ban on mining activities.
The union argued that the continued infiltration is due to inadequate border fencing and a lack of stringent laws, allowing Bangladeshi nationals to enter India freely.
