LONDON, Aug 14: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London ahead of a high-stakes US-Russia summit in Alaska, where former President Trump is expected to push for a Ukraine ceasefire in talks with Vladimir Putin.
Starmer reiterated that any peace deal must protect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and warned of further sanctions if Russia fails to cooperate.
European leaders, including France’s Macron and Germany’s Merz, praised Trump’s engagement but voiced concern about being sidelined and potential territorial concessions.
Some Ukrainians remain skeptical about meaningful progress.
On the battlefield, Russian strikes injured civilians in Ukraine’s Sumy and Kherson regions, including a 7-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy.
In response, Ukraine launched drone attacks on a major oil refinery in Russia’s Volgograd region. Russia claimed to have intercepted 44 drones overnight.
With the war in its fourth year, hopes for lasting peace remain uncertain as military and diplomatic tensions persist. (AP)
