SHILLONG, Aug 16: A petrol bomb was used to attack a private vehicle reportedly used by police near the Pasteur Beat House in Lawmali on Friday.
Officials clarified that no links to the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) have been established at this stage. Police, however, have yet to make any arrests in connection with the case. The incident occurred around 3:30 am, when unidentified miscreants, allegedly riding three motorcycles, hurled a petrol bomb at the vehicle. The impact triggered a fire that damaged the vehicle, but the blaze was quickly brought under control, preventing further spread. Police confirmed that no major damage was caused.
A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway. Authorities said it remains unclear whether the attack is connected to events earlier this week.
On August 14 (Thursday), a flag of the outlawed HNLC was found hoisted in the city during the early hours near the Chillibreeze office, close to the District Commerce and Industries Centre at Lumjingshai, Lawmali Pyllun Block-4. Police personnel from the Pasteur Beat House promptly removed the flag at around 4:30 am.
The date coincided with the HNLC’s 38th raising day, as the outfit was founded on August 14, 1987. Meanwhile, the banned outfit has not claimed responsibility for the attack.
