Aim to ensure peaceful elections in Meghalaya-Assam border areas
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Chief Election Officer (CEO) would hold talks with Assam authorities on Tuesday to work out ways and means for smooth conduct of election along the disputed Assam-Meghalaya border areas.
CEO P. Naik said they will discuss on the issue of coordination besides maintaining of law and order along the border areas during the Lok Sabha polls.
The meeting would also discuss the deployment of security forces along the border.
The first phase of polling will be held in Assam on April 7 while Meghalaya goes to polls two days later.
There are around 125 polling stations along the Assam-Meghalaya border areas.
Naik also informed that out of the total of 2562 polling stations in Meghalaya, 1633 are located in Shillong constituency and 929 in Tura constituencies.
Besides, 90 polling stations are located in 79 locations along the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border.
Reacting to a query, he said that Election department is yet to come up with the lists of sensitive and hyper sensitive polling stations.
Naik said the last date and time for election campaign will be April 7 till 5 pm, adding that a total of 10248 polling officials will be deputed in the 2562 polling stations.
He also said that the first polling parties will start leaving for their respective polling stations on April 6.
