SHILLONG, Aug 23: A total of 96 schoolchildren were exposed to the wonders of space science as the Shillong Science Centre (SSC) marked the 2nd National Space Day with a week-long celebration, which began on August 18 under its PULSE (Promoting Understanding and Learning in Science Education) programme.
According to a statement here, the initiative, supported by the state government, sought to spark scientific curiosity and encourage hands-on learning.
Students from Syndong Secondary Karhadem, Kynjoin Umran Presbyterian Upper Primary and Ka Phan Nonglait Memorial School participated in interactive sessions and workshops covering topics such as the solar system, auroras, the Earth-Moon relationship and India’s space milestones, including the success of Chandrayaan-3.
They also learned about the Orbiter, Vikram Lander, Pragyan Rover, and ISRO’s upcoming missions, while hands-on activities in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, AI, and Robotics inspired them to connect science with innovation.
The celebrations concluded on Saturday, coinciding with National Space Day.
Meanwhile, 35 cadets of the 42 Meghalaya Battalion NCC, from Khasi and Jaintia Hills, celebrated the occasion with an educational visit to the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), Umiam.
During their visit, scientists briefed them on the use of space technology in disaster management, weather forecasting, communication and regional development.
The cadets also toured key facilities and learned about satellite applications and geospatial technologies.
Meanwhile, the Commanding Officer urged the cadets to explore careers in the space sector, stressing the importance of science and technology in nation-building.
The visit, he said, not only deepened their interest in space but also instilled pride in India’s achievements.
