SHILLONG, Aug 28: In a bid to raise awareness among the public about the importance of statistical surveys and data collection, a one-day community discussion programme was organised at Seng Khasi College on Wednesday.
According to a statement here, the event was held as part of the 75th-year celebration of the National Statistics Office (NSO).
The programme was jointly organised by the National Statistics Office, Field Operations Division (FOD), Regional Office, Shillong, Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI), and Seng Khasi College, Shillong.
About 38 traditional heads from different localities of Shillong and its adjoining areas participated in the event.
The session began with a welcome address by Senior Statistical Officer, NSO (FOD), Shillong, Sngewbhalin Kharjana. Principal of Seng Khasi College, Herina Dohtdong, who was the chief guest, spoke about the role of data in daily life and in government policy-making for nation-building.
On the other hand, Senior Statistical Officer, NSO (FOD), Shillong, P. Nongkhlaw highlighted the significance of surveys conducted under the National Sample Survey (NSS), which contribute to planning and policy decisions.
She explained how data collected by the NSO provides critical information on inflation, employment, GDP, dearness allowance and other economic indices.
Meanwhile, Retired Deputy Director of NSO, Shillong, shared her field experiences spanning over three decades, urging local leaders to extend cooperation to field staff during surveys.
Senior Statistical Officer, NSO, Shillong, Sumendra Nongkynrih also interacted with the local headmen to gather feedback on improving data collection processes.
