SHILLONG, Aug 28: Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday announced that a major beautification project is set to take off for Khyndai Lad after the monsoon season, promising a complete transformation of the city’s commercial hub into a more pedestrian-friendly and aesthetically appealing space.
“It is a massive exercise being planned. We have already arranged funding. We look forward to the post-monsoon period to start work and you will see a new look totally,” Lyngdoh told reporters, outlining the government’s vision for the landmark.
According to him, the project will focus on improving urban design while retaining the area’s vibrancy. “Absolutely, it will have the best aesthetics, combination of colours, sound, and pedestrian-friendly features,” he assured.
Asked about concerns over vehicle restrictions in the area, Lyngdoh said the move has not generated significant opposition.
“Vehicles plying during restricted hours? Have not come across complaints. Everything takes time. The business community has benefitted. Hawkers are in their own vending zone and not preventing access to establishments. We expect cooperation from all shopkeepers and residents,” he said.
On the prospect of expanding the beautification efforts beyond Khyndai Lad, particularly to Malki and Jail Road, the Minister said the issue is already being pursued. “I have spoken to the CEO, Shillong Municipal Board (SMB). He said once the Khyndai Lad relocation is completed, this will be taken up. I am confident this will happen in the next couple of months,” he stated.
The Khyndai Lad project is part of the government’s larger plan to revamp Shillong’s core commercial spaces, balancing urban aesthetics with practical benefits for businesses and residents.
Lyngdoh stressed that the success of the initiative will depend on cooperation from all stakeholders. He said he will take up specific concerns with the SMB to ensure smooth implementation.
