Editor,

The study by the PRS Legislative Research data reveals that the national average participation of MPs in the debates is 37.

Statistics of attendance, questions asked have also been revealed .Ms Agatha Sangma has apparently cut a sorry figure for no questions asked and for non participation in the debate. What about our Shillong MP ? It’s not fair to only highlight the non performance of one of the two State MPs while the other is not even mentioned. We the electorate from Shillong parliamentary seat have the right to know how our MP had functioned to enable us to decide whether he deserves to be re-elected. Before this bit of news was published, your esteemed paper should have done this little bit of ground work to provide a complete picture to your avid readers.

NOTA button: another/alternative hope?

Editor,

Come polling-day, 9th April, 2014, who will be the winner will be the question on every one’s lips. But, it is no longer worthwhile to speculate on the result. Elections after elections we have been witnessing the unabashed display of filthy lucre which has been sapping the moral values of the people. How much longer will this go on? The end result will be anarchy! Are we prepared for it? Intellectuals – self and publicly acknowledged alike – should ponder deeply to find a way to forestall that dreaded final result: they are the only hope for the race. The clock is ticking away and the sand is running out. Hope seems to be fading out fast!

NOTA button may be the only hope that only a few may feel compelled to push unless it is made to overwork by the general public who should be made aware of the responsibility attached to the right of franchise. All responsible and learned members of the public should take the responsibility to educate the public to become aware of this.

Yours etc.,

Power cuts and World Cup Football

Editor,

The annual Champion’s League has reached the semi final stage and every football fan looks forward to watching it live. Unfortunately, due to the load shedding we are unable to watch the matches as the power cuts begin just as the matches kick off, leaving us very frustrated. I request the concerned officials and government to ensure that uninterrupted power is provided for the duration of these matches. Further, the World Cup is an event that is eagerly awaited by one and all is around the corner. I am sure there will be even more people, not just football fans, who will not want to miss a single match. It is only fair that while we are paying higher and higher electricity bills we also deserve better power supply when we actually want it the most. Perhaps we need an Anna style agitation to just even watch football matches because nobody, not the opposition, not the NGOs, who are supposedly fighting for the interests of the common man, seem concerned and remain mute spectators. To top it all our government boasts of development at every opportunity while the citizens of a football crazed state can’t even watch a live football match.

Yours etc.,

Name withheld on request
