IMPHAL: The All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM-Tombing group) vehemently condemned the indiscriminate firing within the vicinity of the Theophany Christian Academy, Chakpikarong, Chandel district on April 1 at 4:30pm by one Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel who is reportedly posted at Chakpikarong Police station.

“It is neither desirable nor tolerable to have taken the law of the land into one’s own hand that poses a big threat to the survival of the innocent citizens,” ATSUM stated.

“As a matter of fact, the men in khaki have become a symbol of anathema to the public for the simple fact that they do not possess the ability to handle the trigger rationally or perform one’s duty for the security of the citizens. Reckless and wanton display of manmade machines and firing the fierce bullet at random that hit the roof top of the Theophany Christian Academy speaks volumes that the culprit neither has a civic sense nor is well trained and disciplined,” ATSUM added.

The tribal students’ body said the incident flatly implies the negligence of the officer in charge (OC) of the police station in discharging his duties; thereby he is liable to undergo departmental action from the concerned department.

It then said the concerned police officer had neither visited the school nor apologised the school authorities after the occurrence of the incident. This irresponsible act of the Officer in charge (OC) had further escalated the resentment of the school authority in particular and the students’ community in general, ATSUM added. (NNN)
