SHILLONG, Sep 13: A total of 76 per cent of the repairing and strengthening work of the main dam at Umiam has been completed so far, leaving crucial tasks still pending under the World Bank-funded Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP).
According to information tabled in the Assembly, the balance works include repairing of the concrete step footpath leading to the dam gallery adit, provision of a V-notch in each dam block and installation of a sump well piping system for a dewatering pump at the Umiam dam gallery.
It was also revealed that a total of Rs 12.94 crore has been spent till date under the DRIP scheme for the repair and strengthening of the main dam.
On whether the dam structure, after undergoing strengthening, can now withstand the same vehicular load as before, it was clarified that it cannot sustain such loads as in the past.
It is pertinent to note that the disclosure highlights the scale of work still required to ensure the safety and durability of one of Meghalaya’s most crucial structures.
The bridge, a major lifeline for the state, underwent massive repair and retrofitting in 2024 after concerns were raised from various quarters, including elected representatives, about its safety.
Built in the 1960s by the Assam Electricity Board, the structure had drawn widespread attention until state authorities finally initiated action before any disaster occurred.
In July 2024, the power minister had announced that the works had been completed, extending the bridge’s lifespan by another 20 years.
While traffic movement was resumed in both directions, restrictions on heavy vehicles were imposed and permanent barriers were installed on both sides of the bridge to ensure compliance.
