GUWAHATI, Sept. 16: The Assam government has issued a safety advisory in view of the adverse weather conditions and heavy rainfall predicted at isolated locations across various districts of the state in the coming days.
“The weather pattern suggests that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at the isolated places in various districts of the state in the coming two to three days, including the Greater Guwahati area which may aggravate waterlogging, slow vehicular movement, and increase the risk of localised landslides in vulnerable pockets,” a statement issued by DIPR Assam on Tuesday said.
The local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and emergency response systems are being kept on alert.
“In view of the situation, landslides and water blockage owing to very heavy rainfall occurred a few days back, people of the state and Guwahati city are advised to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant,” the advisory said.
“Daily commuters and long-distance travellers are requested to plan their routines accordingly, avoiding unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall,” it said.
Residents in low-lying and hillside areas have been advised to remain alert for any signs of flooding or landslides.
“Residents in vulnerable areas are further advised to keep an adequate stock of essential items such as medicines, candles, etc. They are advised to reach out to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on helpline numbers, 0361-1070, 0361-1079, 0361-112, and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on 0361-1077,” the advisory said.
Residents have also been requested to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety during this prolonged spell of rain.
“The status of the situation will be updated by ASDMA from time to time for general awareness,’ it said.
Meanwhile, a heavy downpour during peak hours in Guwahati on Tuesday morning yet again crippled normal life, with waterlogging reported from several low-lying areas and vehicular congestion making commuting difficult for people and students to reach their workplaces and institutions respectively on time.
