SHILLONG, Sep 17: Newly inducted cabinet minister, Sanbor Shullai, on Wednesday revealed that many leaders, including sitting MLAs, have sent feelers to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Expressing confidence, he said the party has the potential to win 8-10 seats in the 2028 Assembly elections.
Shullai informed that the BJP has already begun its campaign, with the identification of potential leaders underway, in line with the directives of the party high command.
He claimed that rural voters in Meghalaya have started to accept the BJP based on the good work of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pointing to numerous developmental schemes and projects introduced over the past decade.
On his induction into the state cabinet, Shullai clarified that it was based on an agreement signed between him and AL Hek in the presence of former BJP president Ernest Mawrie.
Asked if there were differences between him and Hek following the reshuffle, he refrained from commenting directly but noted that the party high command had honoured the agreement.
It is pertinent to mention that while the state BJP leadership had earlier remained silent on the existence of such an arrangement, Shullai’s admission has confirmed that the agreement played a role in his induction.
On the issue of portfolios, Shullai said he would be content even with the Fisheries department, as his primary goal is to serve the people of his constituency and the state.
He also dismissed propaganda branding the BJP as an anti-Christian party, stating that such allegations surface only during elections and have never held true in Meghalaya.
