TURA, Sep 20: The Niksamso Garo Community Organisation (NGCO) has strongly criticised the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) for allegedly obstructing the development of NEHU’s Tura Campus.
In a statement issued recently, the organisation condemned NEHUTA’s earlier claims of a “₹94 crore scam” at the Tura Campus, pointing out that no evidence was ever presented and that the allegations were refuted by the then Campus Director, Prof. S. Gurudev. It accused NEHUTA of remaining silent after the clarification and of failing to substantiate its charges.
The NGCO also expressed concern over NEHUTA’s alleged attempts to block the convening of Executive Council (EC) meetings, which are crucial for approving and implementing key infrastructure projects at the Tura Campus.
The group highlighted that the Ministry of Tribal Affairs has already sanctioned ₹45 crore for the first phase of development, warning that any delay could derail critical projects.
The organisation further objected to NEHUTA’s declaration of NEHU Vice-Chancellor Prof. PS Shukla as “persona non grata”, describing the move as divisive and unrepresentative of stakeholders in the Garo Hills.
“For over three decades, the Tura Campus has faced neglect. This is a crucial opportunity for development, and it must not be lost to political infighting,” the organisation asserted.
The NGCO demanded that the Executive Council meeting be held at the earliest, even suggesting it be convened in Tura if necessary. It also urged the Vice-Chancellor to take immediate steps to ensure progress.
The NGCO also called for a cooperative and inclusive approach to the university’s governance and development.
