SHILLONG, Sep 24: The survey work for the four-lane Greenfield Access Controlled 166.8 km stretch of National Highway 6 from Mawlyngkhung (near Shillong) in Meghalaya to Panchgram (near Silchar) in Assam is likely to be completed by the end of this year.
The state government on Wednesday reviewed the progress of the national project with the NHIDCL and DCs. The project is expected to improve connectivity between Meghalaya and other Northeastern states.
Deputy Chief Minister in charge of PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, said that the survey work is more or less completed in the Ri-Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, and West Jaintia Hills districts.
However, there are challenges in East Jaintia Hills due to topography and monsoon, as sometimes, the engineers have to walk for 2-3 hours to reach the areas.
“We are optimistic that the survey for East Jaintia Hills, too, will be completed by the end of this year,” Tynsong said.
The project will be developed for Rs 22,864 crore. Of the 166.8 km, 144.8 km is in Meghalaya and 22 km is in Assam.
Tynsong also said that packages 1, 2, 4, and 5 of the Shillong-Dawki Road Project are progressing well. “Given the inconvenience caused to the people due to the ongoing work on the four-lane stretch, the government has directed the NHIDCL to ensure that the work in Package 1 is completed by December.
The work on the packages 2, 4, and 5 is satisfactory, and it is expected to be completed by December 2026, he said.
