SHILLONG, Sep 25: In what comes as good news for residents of the Cantonment areas, the Shillong Cantonment Board has approved the Draft Building Bye-Laws.
Following the approval, the draft will be forwarded to various authorities of the Ministry of Defence for scrutiny and vetting, with the Ministry of Law also expected to examine its legality. After this process, the Shillong Cantonment Board will issue a public notice inviting objections and suggestions. The Draft Bye-Laws will then be sent back to the Ministry of Defence for final approval and notification through the Gazette.
One of the key provisions in the Draft Building Bye-Laws is the increase of the Floor Space Index (FSI) from 0.5 to 1.5, which the Board has approved subject to clearance by the competent authority.
“We are almost making it at par with adjoining areas,” said Ayush Maurya, CEO of the Shillong Cantonment Board. He added that the Board is also working towards incorporating provisions for climate-resilient buildings.
According to Maurya, the new bye-laws will be comprehensive and modern, with all building permissions to be applied for and processed online, making the system faster and more transparent.
It has also been learnt that on motorable roads, construction permissions will be allowed up to 14 metres (G+3), while in non-motorable areas, the permissible height will be 11 metres (G+2).
The Draft Building Bye-Laws are expected to address the longstanding concerns of Cantonment residents, many of whom have been seeking approvals to construct RCC buildings.
