SHILLONG, Sep 26: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will convene a special session on September 30 to elect a new Chief Executive Member (CEM), following the resignation of Shemborlang Rynjah.
KHADC Chairman Strong Pillar Kharjana informed that Governor CH Vijayashankar has authorised him to convene the special session.
“I have summoned the council to meet at 11 am on September 30 in the District Council Hall, Shillong, for the election of the new CEM,” Kharjana stated in the notification issued on Friday.
Intending candidates are required to file their nomination papers with the Secretary of the KHADC Legislative Wing by 12 noon on September 29, the notification stated.
Scrutiny of the papers will take place the same day at 12.15 pm in line with the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 1951.
A letter from the District Council Affairs Department to the KHADC Secretary on Friday stated that the Governor has accepted Rynjah’s resignation with effect from September 24.
The Governor however has authorised Rynjah to continue discharging the duties of the Executive Committee until a new CEM is elected.
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Thursday unanimously nominated its Nongthymmai MDC, Winston Tony Lyngdoh as its CEM candidate.
VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said that Lyngdoh was chosen for continuity, as he had been part of the outgoing Executive Committee.
“He understands how the party and the EC function. The party wants to continue the initiatives started by the previous dispensation,” Basaiawmoit explained.
On the other hand, the Opposition is yet to announce its candidate.
In the 30-member KHADC, the VPP enjoys a clear majority with 18 members, including one nominated MDC. The Opposition bloc consists of 12 members — five from the NPP, five from the UDP, one from the HSPDP, and one Independent.
