TURA, Sep 29: The North East Indigenous People’s Association (NEIPA) has expressed concern over the recent violence in Bangladesh which led to the deaths of four local tribals, while over 40 other people were injured in firing by army personnel.
The incident reportedly took place Khagrachari Guimara area when armed personnel fired on a group of indigenous local people, who were protesting the alleged gang rape of an 8th grader from the community, by alleged illegal settlers. The alleged rape incident took place on September 23.
“The Bangladesh government should take immediate action to protect the indigenous communities by implementing the CHT Accord of 1997. We also demand an investigation into the role of the military personnel as well as the demilitarization of the area to ensure the people’s safety,” its General Secretary Bostone M Sangma said.
