Govt to hand over 128 acres of land to Elaka Saitsohpen

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG, Sep 30: The state government decided to resolve the decades-old land dispute by handing over approximately 128 acres of land to the Elaka Saitsohpen, while the remaining land will remain with the GAD and the state government.
The Cabinet has approved the extent of land under the General Administration Department (GAD) at Saitsohpen, within the Sohra Civil Sub-Division, recommended by the committee chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, marking a significant step towards resolving the dispute.
For several decades, there has been a dispute between the Elaka Saitsohpen and the state government regarding ownership of land in the area. To address the issue, a committee chaired by the deputy chief minister was constituted.
The committee engaged extensively with all concerned stakeholders to facilitate a permanent resolution.
Following detailed deliberations and thorough examination of historical records, including occupation by residents and the Elaka dating back to pre-statehood and even the British era.
After consultation with concerned stakeholders, the committee recommended a division of land that has now been approved by the Cabinet.
This balanced and inclusive approach aims to end the long-pending dispute.
A formal agreement involving all relevant stakeholders will be drawn up to give effect to the decision and ensure lasting clarity and resolution to the long-pending issue.
Meanwhile, the state Cabinet also approved the Meghalaya Directorate and District Drivers’ Service Rules, 2025.
These rules established a uniform framework for managing drivers employed under Directorates and District Offices across various Administrative Departments.
Previously, the absence of such service rules led to inconsistencies in service management, pay structures, career progression, and general working conditions.
With today’s approval, a standardized system will now be in place to ensure fairness, clarity, and improved service conditions for all concerned employees.
