NONGPOH, Oct 6: In a bid to promote fish farming in the Marmain area of Ri-Bhoi, the Marmain Circle Freshwater Fisheries Multipurpose Co-operative Society Limited was inaugurated by Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem on Monday.
The newly established cooperative society comprises 16 villages within the Marmain area and oversees around 496 ponds that will be used as modern fish farming units. The initiative seeks not only to enhance local fish production in line with scientific practices but also to boost the local economy and livelihoods of the residents.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Nongpoh MDC Rona Khymdeit, Umling C&RD Block Development Officer Eric Kevin Dkhar, several government officials, leaders and members of the Society, besides residents of surrounding villages. In his address, the Nongpoh MLA urged the leaders and members of the Society to work together with a spirit of unity, trust, and mutual support. He encouraged them to move forward with commitment and cooperation for the collective progress of the region.
Syiem also highlighted various government schemes available to support cooperative societies, self-help groups, village organisations, and producer groups that are engaged in livelihood-based activities. He expressed optimism that the proposal of the Marmain Circle Fisheries Society, currently under consideration by the government, would be approved soon. He further encouraged the members to work diligently and with a clear vision for sustained growth year after year.
Speaking on the occasion, MDC Rona Khymdeit remarked that the establishment of the Society would significantly contribute to the economic upliftment of the people, complementing other sectors such as agriculture and livestock. She expressed confidence that with over 400 ponds now under the Society’s care, the venture would become a true blessing for the local communities.
As part of the programme, fingerlings were distributed to several villages to mark the official launch of the Society and the beginning of a new chapter in fish farming in the Marmain area.
