ANKARA, Oct 7: On the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, large-scale pro-Palestinian protests took place across several countries, condemning Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.
The conflict has killed over 67,000 people, displaced 90% of Gaza’s population, and created a severe humanitarian crisis.
In Jakarta, Indonesia, more than 1,000 protesters marched to the US Embassy, demanding an end to Israel’s blockade and the release of activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla. Authorities deployed over 1,000 police to secure the protest.
Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and chanted “Free free Palestine.”
In Japan, hundreds marched through Tokyo, Osaka, and other cities calling for a Gaza ceasefire and sanctions on Israel.
A candlelight vigil was held in Taiwan.
In Istanbul, where public support for Palestinians is strong, the Galata Tower was illuminated in Palestinian colors, and a protest was planned near the Israeli Consulate.
Turkish authorities also canceled a Robbie Williams concert due to security concerns.
In the UK, Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned university protests planned on the anniversary as “un-British,” warning they could fuel antisemitism.
His remarks followed a deadly attack on a Manchester synagogue.
In response, authorities increased security around Jewish sites and are considering expanding police powers to restrict recurring protests. (AP)
