SHILLONG, Oct 10: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Sangma has admitted that the party has not been organised in the manner it was expected to be in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region.
Refusing to name party president Charles Pyngrope, Sangma said there are always inherent challenges in building a political party.
“The party is well organised in Garo Hills but not here in Khasi and Jaintia Hills,” he said, adding that he is only the leader of the TMC Legislature Party and does not hold any other post in the party.
Pointing out that responsibilities are distributed among several functionaries, he said that the legislators of the party are trying to perform their duties without infringing upon the domain of any of their colleagues.
“It is true that as far as the organisation of this party in the eastern part of the state is concerned, we have not done our job,” he admitted.
The statement from Mukul Sangma comes at a time when the party has remained largely silent since the 2023 Assembly polls, amid speculation that party president Charles Pyngrope may join the Congress before the 2028 elections.
Asked about reports that some MDCs in Garo Hills are planning to leave the TMC, Sangma said some people lack patience.
He added that if someone is keeping quiet, it might be because the person concerned is working on a strategy.
Asserting that many sitting MDCs, MLAs and even former MLAs have expressed their willingness to join the TMC, Sangma said many leaders are waiting to be nurtured. “I will nurture, handhold and groom the leaders for the state,” he said.
He further clarified that he is still with the TMC and is working to build the party in Meghalaya by fulfilling his responsibilities.
