JOWAI, Oct 10: Curtain came down on the weeklong Wildlife Week celebration themed ‘Human-Animal Coexistence’ with a valedictory event held at the District Library Auditorium, Mynthong, Jowai.
Organised by the Jaintia Hills Wildlife Division, the event honoured 48 ‘Wildlife Samaritans’ from East and West Jaintia Hills for their efforts in rescuing and protecting wild animals.
The programme was attended by Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla and District & Sessions Judge Noor Ain Khan as the chief guest and the guest of honour respectively. Other dignitaries from the Forest department and local councils were also present.
In her address, Shylla emphasised the importance of environmental education and urged for greater outreach in rural areas to promote sustainable living.
On the other hand, Khan highlighted the need for human-animal coexistence and cautioned against the consequences of environmental degradation.
As part of the celebration, the office conducted a series of activities including a drawing and painting competition for Classes VI-VIII on the theme ‘Living in Harmony with Wildlife’, an essay writing competition for Classes IX–X on ‘Human-Animal Co-existence’ and an extempore speech competition for Classes XI-XII.
