SHILLONG, Oct 11: Amid panic growing over a string of child murders across Meghalaya, the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) Shillong Circle has demanded that the state government urgently revive and strengthen Local Defence Organisations (LDOs) to restore public confidence and bolster community safety.
In a letter to Home Minister Prestone Tynsong, the students’ organisation expressed alarm over the recent spate of brutal killings, particularly in and around Shillong, which it said had “sparked great fear and anxiety among the public, especially parents and local communities.”
The JSU stressed that the situation calls for immediate action to step up night patrols and community-based vigilance.
It urged the government to reactivate LDOs in every locality and coordinate their functioning with the police to ensure quicker reporting of suspicious movements and enhanced neighbourhood watch.
“The involvement of local defence bodies will be vital in safeguarding our communities and preventing further tragedies,” the Union stated, warning that complacency could deepen the sense of insecurity gripping residents.
