SHILLONG, Oct 12: The Kuki Human Rights Council (KHRC) has expressed concern over Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s recent visit to Manipur and his stand against the demand for bifurcation of Manipur into two administrative units.
The KHRC was dismayed over Sangma’s biased stance which seemed to disregard Manipur’s integrity.
The KHRC noted that the Kukis, who are demanding separate administration, are inspired by Meghalaya’s struggle for statehood.
The Council emphasised that Manipur’s hill areas are ancestral lands of Kukis and Nagas, while the valley is home to Meiteis.
“The current administrative setup has failed to recognise distinct identities and aspirations. We believe that granting separate administration would uphold democratic principles, ensure sustainability, and maintain peace. Failure to do so may jeopardise peace, morality, and democracy,” the KHRC stated.
It may be recalled that during his recent visit to Manipur, Sangma said his party NPP was against separate administration for Kukis and bifurcation of ethnic strife-torn Manipur.
“Looking at a completely separate administration or completely bifurcating the state of Manipur is not the stand of the National People’s Party. We are very clear on that,” he had said.
