NONGPOH, Oct 15: In yet another determined move to enforce traffic discipline, the Ri-Bhoi Police on Wednesday night conducted an intensive vehicle checking drive from 9 PM till 1 AM, during which fines amounting to over ₹ 3 lakh were collected within four hours.
This operation follows two earlier massive drives led personally by SSP Vivekanand Singh Rathore, during which fines worth ₹ 8 lakh and ₹ 10.5 lakh were imposed respectively — taking the total fines collected during October 2025 to over ₹ 25 lakh. The series of drives marks one of the most sustained and successful road safety campaigns in the district’s history.
Wednesday night’s drive was also supervised by SSP Rathore, assisted by Additional Superintendent of Police Orville Massar and other senior officers.
Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, police found that several motorists continue to violate traffic rules. Common offences detected included driving under the influence of alcohol, installation of blinding LED headlights, and other traffic violations.
During the operation, a night super bus bearing registration number WB29C3048, carrying 65 passengers, was intercepted. The driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol, with an alcometer reading of 268 mg per 100 ml, far above the legal limit of 30 mg per 100 ml.
SSP Rathore personally addressed the passengers, explaining the grave danger they could have faced had the bus continued on the road. He urged them to stay vigilant and report unsafe driving immediately.
The bus driver was detained until he sobered up, while passengers were allowed to rest and have meals during the waiting period.
Few drunken drivers were also caught on camera attempting to bribe officers on duty, but such attempts were firmly rejected, with strict legal action taken against the offenders.
Reaffirming the department’s resolve, SSP Rathore stated that similar surprise checking drives will continue across Ri-Bhoi as part of ongoing efforts to curb reckless driving and safeguard public safety.
