SHILLONG, Oct 16: A man was rescued from a mob trying to lynch him in Lawmei, Diengiei area early on Thursday morning after being mistakenly suspected of being a ‘Menshohnoh’.
According to information received from the headman of Lawmei, the incident took place around 8 am.
Officers and personnel from Lumdiengiri Police Station and the Special Operations Team (SOT) rushed to the area, where the individual, identified as Nicolas Lyngkhoi (39), resident of Ktichthawiar, Mawshynrut, was being kept under the custody of village elders in Lawmei community hall.
He was immediately rescued and taken to safety.
During preliminary questioning, Lyngkhoi stated that he works as a tree feller in the forests around Umiam.
At approximately 9 pm on Wednesday night, he left Umiam to visit a relative in Umthlong, Sohiong area.
However, he abandoned the plan while passing near Lawmei and spent the night in a local shed due to cold weather.
The next morning around 6 am, the shed’s owner spotted Lyngkhoi, took photographs and alerted neighbours, which reportedly led to the mob gathering.
Following his rescue, Lyngkhoi was taken to Lumdiengiri Police Station and later sent for a medical examination at Shillong Civil Hospital, where he was found to have sustained minor injuries.
The matter is, meanwhile, under investigation.
