88 Ri-Bhoi farmers benefit from training programme

SHILLONG, Oct 18: As many as 88 farmers from Pamryngai village and nearby areas participated in the Muga Farmer’s Field Day programme organised by the Central Silk Board, Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organisation (MESSO), P-3 Unit, Nongpoh.
According to a statement here, the programme, which was organised on Friday at Pamryngai village, Umsning, aimed to identify new potential zones for Muga silkworm rearing and to equip farmers with scientific knowledge, improved rearing techniques and solutions to field-level challenges.
Scientist-C of MESSO Nongpoh, Abhishek Singh, conducted a session on improved Muga silkworm rearing technologies, highlighting scientific approaches to enhance productivity and address common field issues. His interactive session allowed farmers to share their experiences, to which he provided practical and context-specific solutions.
On the other hand, Senior Field Assistant, Surujeet Kaushik, focused on the practical aspects of Muga rearing through live demonstrations, guiding farmers on adopting best practices for sustainable production. Field Assistant, Dolly Choudhury, conducted a session on Som nursery management and nursery raising techniques.
On the occasion, an extension bulletin titled ‘Raising Healthy Host Plants for Muga Silkworm: A Farmer’s Guide’ was released and distributed among participants. The publication provides step-by-step guidance on host plant cultivation, maintenance, and management—vital components for successful Muga silkworm rearing.
“The Muga Farmer’s Field Day Programme reaffirmed the Central Silk Board commitment to promoting sericulture in Meghalaya by fostering innovation, sustainability, and farmer welfare. Such initiatives are instrumental in strengthening the region’s Muga silk industry and enhancing the livelihoods of sericulture farmers through capacity building and technology dissemination,” the statement said.
