SHILLONG, Oct 21: The three-day winter session of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will commence on Wednesday, with the Executive Committee (EC) expected to table several significant resolutions.
Among the key items on the agenda is an official resolution opposing the Office Memorandum (OM) issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). The EC plans to move this resolution on the opening day of the session. Earlier, the KHADC had already responded to the Ministry’s letter dated September 8, seeking exemption from the applicability of the OM, which pertains to the proposed uranium mining in areas falling under the Council’s jurisdiction.
In addition, the EC is set to introduce an amendment to the Meghalaya Building Bye-Laws, 2021, currently implemented by the Council. The amendment aims to address complaints from landowners with small plots who have faced difficulties in constructing houses under the existing provisions.
The Council is also likely to table reports on the reconstitution of the Khasi Traditional Medicine Commission (KTMC) and the Khasi Hills District (Administration of Justice) (Amendment) Rules, 2025.
Meanwhile, the opposition alliance in the KHADC, Synrop Liang Iatei (Constructive Alliance), has remained tight-lipped about the issues it plans to raise during the session, which concludes on Friday.
However, sources indicate that opposition MDCs may bring up matters related to Hima Maharam’s alleged land allotment to the BSF and the MoEFCC’s Office Memorandum.
