BANGKOK, Oct 25: Thailand’s Queen Mother Sirikit has died at 93 in a Bangkok hospital after suffering a blood infection.
Widely revered for her charitable and environmental work, she helped rural communities through royal development projects, promoting traditional crafts and conservation.
Born in 1932, Sirikit married King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1950 and was deeply involved in national life, though largely absent from public view after a 2012 stroke.
King Vajiralongkorn has ordered a year of mourning and a state funeral with the highest honours.
Her death marks the end of an era for Thailand’s deeply respected royal family. (AP)
