Shillong, Oct 26: Meghalaya started out their run in the Sub-Junior Boys National Football Championship 2025-26 (Tier 2) with a sensational 6-1 victory over hosts Chhattisgarh in Narainpur on Sunday.
After a goalless first half an hour, Meghalaya burst forth with four goals in the run-up to half time. Macstar Nongkynrih (33’), Marbiang Marwein (34’, 34’) and Wanpyndapbor Nongsiej (45’+2) were the scorers.
Then, in the second half, Iaishanborlang Khongjee (69’, 78’) produced a brace on either side of Chhattisgarh’s lone goal in the 72nd minute. Marbiang was named Player of the Match. With such a convincing win, Meghalaya, coached by Dapmon Tariang, are on top of Group C after the first round. Only the top team from each of the four groups will progress to the semifinals, however, so the boys will have to remain consistent going forward.
Meghalaya will play Andhra Pradesh next on Tuesday at 8:30am. Andhra lost their opening match this morning to Himachal Pradesh 3-2.
The emphatic victory over the hosts has not only boosted confidence but also sent a clear message to the rest of Group C. Consistency will be key if the young side hopes to top the group.
